Nitrous oxide, in dentistry, is a form of sedation used to help patients relax during treatment. Its chemical formula is N2O and it is a colorless gas with a very light, sweet odor. When inhaled, nitrous oxide produces a sedative effect and may even create feelings of euphoria, which is how it gets its nickname, laughing gas.
