Dr. Jeffrey Robertson and the rest of our caring dental staff want you to have the healthiest, most attractive smile possible. Part of having that healthy smile is making sure your teeth are straight enough to clean and care for.
It may be surprising to learn that the positioning of your teeth is about more than just looks. While having an aligned smile will help you feel more confident in your appearance, the more important reason to keep your teeth in a row is that straight smiles are almost always healthier and in better condition than crooked ones.
If you’re struggling to maintain your oral health because of out-of-line teeth, orthodontic treatments like Invisalign can be the solution you need. Our Irvine Invisalign dentist, Dr. Jeffrey Robertson, is currently accepting new dental patients and can meet with you to discuss how clear braces can change your life.

What is the right way to keep my teeth clean?
You probably already know that you should be brushing your teeth several times each day, but have you ever stopped to really think about your brushing strategy and technique? When it comes to oral hygiene, the way you do things matters.
Of course, doing something is always better than doing nothing. Any effort you put into your oral health is better than putting forth no effort. At a minimum, you should brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes at a time and floss once every 24 hours.
To give yourself the best chance at keeping your smile healthy, though, you need to pay a little more attention to your technique. The basics of tooth-brushing are always to use a fluoride toothpaste and a brush with very soft bristles, so you don’t damage or recede your gum tissue.
Once you place a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on your toothbrush, you need to hold the brush at a 45-degree angle off of your gum line. Many people hold their toothbrush completely parallel to their teeth or cover each tooth entirely while brushing, but you should always begin at an angle so that the bristles can effectively remove plaque and food from beneath your gum line.
To keep your teeth truly clean, you should brush after every snack or meal and swish water around in your mouth after eating to neutralize acids. Reinforce your brushing with daily flossing and mouthwash rinses.
But what does all of this have to do with Invisalign, anyway? Even if you know the best way to keep your teeth clean and have an excellent technique in your oral hygiene habits, it won’t matter if your teeth are severely crooked and sitting at strange angles.
Straight teeth are easy to brush and clean because there is one consistent direction to follow, and very few places for food and bacteria to hide. With an aligned smile, you can visually see spots that you may have missed during brushing and flossing, and food stuck between your teeth will look rather obvious. When your smile is crooked, this is not the case—which means you can easily overlook problem areas or do an inadequate job flossing and brushing despite your best efforts.
Invisalign in Irvine, CA helps solve this problem. By straightening your teeth with clear braces, you move your teeth into alignment and create a way for your smile to become healthier.
I’m an adult who would feel embarrassed wearing regular braces. How is Invisalign different?
At Irvine Dental, we completely understand not wanting to walk around with a mouth full of metal. If you have a career or other social responsibilities, it’s only natural to be embarrassed by the thought of wearing braces during your professional interactions.
Invisalign clear braces, however, look very different from regular braces. Unlike metal brackets and wires, Invisalign aligners are:
Invisalign trays are thin layers of plastic that fit over your teeth like a glove—meaning that your natural smile still shines through, and there are no distractions. Unless someone else looks at your smile very carefully, they won’t even be able to tell you’re wearing braces! That’s quite a different story than if you were using traditional alignment methods.
Invisalign clear braces allow you to:
- Eat a regular diet free from restrictions because there’s no chance of damaging metal brackets
- Leave your trays at home for a few hours if you have a special occasion
- Brush and floss your teeth without worrying about cleaning around bulky wires
- Visually appreciate your progress as you’re able to see your teeth come into alignment

How does Invisalign work?
When you are ready to begin treatment with Invisalign, we’ll first take digital images of your teeth and then use a computer program to create a treatment plan to move your teeth into their correct position. We’ll send this information to the dental lab that creates your Invisalign aligners, and they’ll create a series of aligners according to the plan.
Your aligners are numbered in the sequence in which you need to wear them. All you have to do is wear the aligners over your teeth in their assigned order. The aligners put pressure on your teeth, and this pressure gently coaxes the teeth to move.
After you’ve worn each aligner for the prescribed amount of time, usually about two weeks, you simply throw the aligner away and move on to the next one in the series. Most Invisalign patients have somewhere between 20 and 50 sets of clear aligners.
Since you remove your clear braces to eat, you don’t have to worry about what you can and can’t eat during your orthodontic treatment. Additionally, you remove the aligner to brush and floss your teeth, so there’s no hassle of trying to brush and floss around brackets and wires.
Is Invisalign expensive?
At Irvine Dental, we understand that cost plays a significant role in your decision to move forward with dental treatment.
The price of Invisalign is different for every patient, so it’s hard to give an exact estimate without an orthodontic consultation. Typically, however, Invisalign in Irvine is similar in price to traditional braces. For more uncomplicated cases, Invisalign may cost a few thousand dollars, but the total may be closer to $5,000 or more for complex situations.
Some dental insurance plans cover part or most of a round of Invisalign treatment. Your family’s specific expenses will depend on your insurance plan and the benefits available. Our knowledgeable dental staff members are happy to review your dental insurance or financial situation with you.
If Invisalign is important to you, we will explore payment plans or financing options with you so we can help make your dream of having a straighter smile a reality.
