While the cause of snoring is often not known for sure, but certain risk factors increase the chances of snoring in certain individuals.
- Obesity
- Males snore more than females
- Thick neck circumference
- Swollen tonsils
- Sickness
- Allergies
- Nasal polyps
- Deformed septum
- A large tongue
- Alcohol use
- Sleeping pills or sedatives
Snoring can disrupt sleep for the whole family when it is severe and it may be a sign of another serious condition called obstructive sleep apnea. If we suspect obstructive sleep apnea, we may refer you to a sleep clinic to confirm a diagnosis in order to know how to properly treat you.
Avoiding alcohol and sleeping pills may also help improve your sleep by lessening snoring. Alcohol and sleeping pills sometimes over-relax the muscles at the back of the throat, causing an obstruction.
Treating Snoring
At Dr. Jeffrey Robertson’s office, we typically treat snoring with an oral appliance designed to help open your airway and prevent or lessen snoring. Our patients report success with our oral appliances and note that they are comfortable to wear and allow them to get a better quality of sleep.
