No big secret exists when it comes to achieving a healthy smile. Following a simple formula at home and having regular dental cleanings and exams are all you need to avoid most smile-damaging dental conditions.
Irvine general dentist, Dr. Jeffrey C. Robertson, DDS, recommends the following at-home practices to promote healthy teeth and gums:
1. Brush your teeth and don’t skimp on time.
Are you getting the most out of your tooth brushing routine? Proper brushing technique means that you brush every surface of each tooth, paying special attention to the areas near your gums by angling the bristles toward your gums. You don’t need to press hard to get the job done, but you do need to brush for a full two minutes. Think of it as a two-minute break twice each day.
2. Floss every tooth (both sides) every day.
Flossing is actually more like using floss as a squeegee to clean your teeth. Get a long piece of floss – about 36 inches – and move to a clean area of floss for each tooth. Run the floss up and down both sides of each tooth; don’t just pop it in and out really fast. This routine helps to keep your gums healthy and your breath fresh.
3. Eat healthy foods.
Fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and dairy, and a low-sugar diet can contribute to better oral health and better overall health.
4. Avoid soda and energy drinks.
Sugar and energy drinks cause two strikes when it comes to the protective enamel covering your teeth. They are both high in sugar and high in acidity. Combined these make your smile a target for the bacteria that cause decay.
5. Wear an athletic mouthguard for sports and adventures.
Don’t let a rogue fly ball or a hockey stick damage your smile permanently. An athletic mouthguard can keep your teeth safe.
