Why Should We Fix Crooked Teeth?
Crooked teeth are common, and treating them is sometimes viewed as a cosmetic procedure. The truth, however, is that crooked teeth can pave the way for a number of dental health problems, including decay and periodontal disease.
When your teeth are crowded, overlapping, or twisted, it’s difficult to effectively clean the entire surface. Toothbrushes and dental floss can’t fit between teeth that are too close together, and it’s easy for plaque and tartar to build up, increasing your risk of decay. When plaque and tartar build-up beneath the gumline because the teeth can’t be appropriately brushed and flossed, the result may be periodontal disease, a serious and chronic health condition.
Teeth that are widely spaced with gaps can also have dental health problems. Wide spaces trap food easily, which may stay there until your next brushing. During the time that the food is trapped, bacteria can build up, leading to bad breath and plaque build-up.
Teeth with unusual spacing can also be subject to pressures that they were never intended to handle. This can lead to loosening of the teeth, excessive wear-and-tear or erosion, and even chips and cracks.
Dr. Robertson is happy to examine your teeth and discuss how Invisalign can solve your dental health concerns.
How Does Invisalign Work?
When you are ready to begin treatment with Invisalign, we’ll take digital images of your teeth and then use a computer program to create a treatment plan to move your teeth into their correct position. We’ll send this information to the lab that creates your Invisalign aligners, and they’ll create a series of aligners according to the plan.
Your aligners will be numbered in the sequence in which they should be worn. All you have to do is wear the aligners over your teeth in their assigned order. The aligners put pressure on your teeth, and this pressure gently coaxes the teeth to move. After you’ve worn the aligner for the prescribed amount of time, you simply throw the aligner away and move on to the next one in the series.
Since you remove your aligner to eat, you don’t have to worry about what you can and can’t eat during your orthodontic treatment. Additionally, you remove the aligner to brush and floss your teeth, so there’s no hassle of trying to brush and floss around brackets and wires.
