Accepted Insurances FAQ | Delta Dental accepted dentist When it comes to insurance, we are a Delta Premier Provider and a CIGNA DNSP Provider (Cigna Dental Network Savings Program).

We are considered an out-of-network provider for most other plans but if you have a PPO plan we can take your insurance. Being an in-network provider for every insurance limits the type of treatment and quality of care we can provide for our patients.

When patients come to our office, they receive the time and attention required to achieve and maintain a healthy mouth. Our hygienists have a full hour with our patients at each hygiene appointment. We use high-quality materials, great dental labs, and Dr. Robertson provides high quality, meticulous dentistry.

Making Payments

Most dental plans provide the same yearly maximum amount and percentage of coverage in or out of network. The difference is the fee schedule. Our fees are reasonable and customary for our area and are approved by Delta Dental. It is the old saying you get what you pay for.

If you have questions about your specific insurance coverage, we can help! Give us a call and we can answer those questions for you or visit our financial page here.

Children's Braces

Kids Braces in Irvine CASometimes the best time to treat certain conditions is before they have time to fully develop. Preventative orthodontics is no exception. When we treat children in our office, we monitor them closely in order to make sure that they are on a successful path to oral health and wellness. If we see a potential problem that needs addressing before it develops and causes more extensive damage, we will make you aware of the issue.

Preventative orthodontics may seem like a luxury. In reality, early intervention can reduce treatment time, severity, and cost down the line. We do our best to make treatment as easy and non-invasive as possible. So if we see a way to treat a problem before it progresses, we think you should know about it. As always, the final decision about treatment is your decision to make.

Conditions Fixed Through Braces

Overcrowding, crossbite, crooked teeth, and malocclusion are all conditions that we can address through early childhood orthodontics. Using tools such as expanders, we may even avoid the need for extractions later in treatment.

Orthodontics today is just as focused on function as aesthetics. We take into account comfort and longevity. You only get one smile, so let us make the most of it. Call our office today!

Children's Braces in Irvine, CAEarly childhood intervention with braces is becoming increasingly common because this method is beneficial in order to address conditions before they become a serious issue. Problems such as cross bite and overcrowding in younger children require early treatment, eliminating the need for more extensive treatment and even extractions later.

When you bring your child to our Irvine, California dental office, Dr. Jeffrey Robertson will monitor your child closely looking for any indication that orthodontic intervention may benefit them. If he sees something you should know about, he will let you know right away so that you can make the best decisions possible regarding your child’s health. We can describe the conditions and treatment possibilities.

The Pros of Early Treatment

In some cases, early treatment reduces the overall cost and time necessary for treatment later in your child’s teen years. We could avoid the need for surgeries and extractions down the line by treating your child during their growing years.

Dr. Robertson is an expert at treating children and orthodontics is no exception. We make it is easy and convenient to get comprehensive, quality dental care for your entire family. To find out if your child needs orthodontics, contact us to schedule an evaluation. We look forward to supporting the overall health and beauty of your entire family.

Children's Orthodontist Irvine, CAAt our Irvine, California dental office, we treat all types of children’s orthodontic cases. From overcrowding to crooked teeth, orthodontics is not just about aesthetics anymore. In fact, function and comfort are our number one goals. Aesthetics are important, too, but we believe having the most beautiful smile on the planet is worthless unless you can comfortably chew.

Children begin to show signs of overcrowding and malocclusion as young as seven years old. Diagnosing your child early may help to minimize the treatment necessary to improve your child’s dental health.

Conditions we treat include:

  • Crossbite
  • Underbite
  • Overbite
  • Overcrowding
  • Malocclusion
  • Crooked teeth
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Oddly placed teeth

No matter the condition, Dr. Jeffrey Robertson can give you the best possible chance for a healthy outcome. If you suspect your child may require orthodontic treatment, give our office a call and we can set up an evaluation so that you know potential problems and possible treatment.

Scheduling Your Child's Appointment

Of course, aesthetics is important, too. If your child has crooked teeth and you would like the opportunity to hear about options to improve their smile, we look forward to hearing from you, as well. Looking great and feeling great means an increased quality of life and overall better confidence.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children be evaluated for orthodontics by age seven. At this age, enters what we call the mixed dentition stage; they still have baby teeth, but their first permanent molar has erupted.

The process for your child potentially needing braces

Just because we evaluate your child for orthodontics, however, doesn’t necessarily mean they family of three laying on the grass with their dog smilingneed braces. In fact, seeing your son or daughter at this age and providing early treatment may eliminate the need for braces in the future.

The goal of early orthodontic treatment—also called Phase One Treatment or interceptive orthodontics—is to ensure that there’s enough space in your child’s jaw for their permanent teeth to erupt correctly. The types of problems Dr. Robertson looks for during his evaluation are spacing problems and malocclusion (overbite, underbite, crossbite, etc.).

Depending on his findings, Dr. Robertson may recommend Phase One Treatment that usually involves wearing an orthodontic appliance. For example, if your son or daughter lost a baby tooth before it was ready to come out on its own, Dr. Robertson may recommend a space maintainer. This appliance prevents neighboring teeth from moving by holding space, so the permanent tooth comes in straight.

Whatever your child needs, our Irvine team is here

Jeffrey C. Robertson, DDS is an experienced dentist who offers children's braces in Irvine, CA. He will evaluate your child and let you know if early treatment can eliminate the need for full orthodontic treatment when they get older. Please call us at (714) 838-7272 to arrange a convenient appointment.

Dental Implants

couple smiling | cosmetic dentistry irvine ca Major improvements have been made in both dental implants and dental bridges over the years. From the latest techniques, to the best materials for the job, your tooth-replacement options have never been better.

Dental bridges are a common and effective tooth replacement option in many cases. Dr. Jeffrey Robertson has years of experience making his patients extremely satisfied by creating beautiful and functional dental bridges.

In many cases, dental implants provide a more effective and convenient option for our patients. While a dental implant is not a good solution for every case, they do provide the tooth replacement option most like your natural teeth. Dental implants do not require the adjacent teeth to be prepped, so they help preserve the structure of your other natural teeth.

Additionally, dental implants help with bone retention. Because your teeth are rooted in your bone, when you lose a tooth your bone may begin to melt away. This can cause complications for your adjacent and opposing teeth. An implant is surgically placed in your bone and can help prevent bone loss.

Which Tooth Replacement Option Is Right For You?

If you are missing a tooth and you want to know your options, call our Irvine, CA dental office. We help patients just like you every day and look forward to the opportunity to partner with you in health.

Many factors must be taken into consideration when determining if dental implants will be the right choice for your tooth replacement treatment. It is important to ensure that you are healthy enough for implants so that implant surgery works effectively for you.

When you visit our office, we will take a full medical history, including your current and past prescription drugs, to make sure that you are healthy enough for dental surgery. While most patients can have implants, certain medications can affect your body’s ability to accept dental implants. Some medical conditions might prevent implants from integrating with your body.

Dr. Jeffrey Robertson will also test the level and density of your bone to make sure that your bone is strong enough to support the dental implant post. In many cases, even if your bone structure is insufficient, you can have procedures like bone grafting to improve your bone density.

Best Tooth Replacement Option

Implants remain one of the most convenient and effective tooth replacement options available. Coming to our Irvine, CA office for a full evaluation will allow Dr. Robertson to create a treatment plan for all of your specific needs. He will share his honest opinion about what options might work best for you and help you make the best decisions regarding your dental health.

Dental Implants in Irvine CADental implants are a popular method for tooth replacement because they are reliable and look just like your natural teeth. We surgically place dental implants in your jawbone and they integrate with your natural bone. We call this process osseointegration. Surgeons use biocompatible metals to promote osseointegration.

Once your implant and your bone fully integrate, we can place your dental crown on top of your dental implant to complete your smile and your chewing surface. Your crown is one of a kind! All of our crowns are custom made for our patients and blend in with their natural teeth seamlessly.

Are You Right For Dental Implants?

Most modern dentists recommend dental implants as the first line of treatment for a missing tooth, but not everyone qualifies for dental implants. In some rare instances, if you take certain medications or have certain medical conditions, dental implants may not work for you. Dr. Robertson will keep you informed and answer your questions every step of the way. At our office, we like to educate our patients as well as provide them with a number of options.

Dental implants can solve many problems for patients. Prosthetics can be awkward and uncomfortable. Dental implants most closely resemble your natural teeth in both appearances as well as function.

Are you curious about dental implants and wonder if they are right for you? Call us and schedule an evaluation. We will be happy to discuss treatment options with you.

Dental Implants in Irvine, CAOne of the things that patients really enjoy about dental implants is how easy they are to care for. If you use the same consideration you have for your natural teeth, your dental implant should last a long time with only minimal adjustments needed. We will examine the health of your dental implant at each appointment so you can get the most out of your dentistry!

As a reminder, here are some tips on caring for your dental implant:

  • Brush twice daily, making sure to brush near and just below the gumline.
  • Floss in between each tooth on both sides.
  • Eat a healthy diet.
  • Schedule and maintain regular dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays.
  • Notify us right away if something changes with your oral health.
  • Don’t bite into anything too hard that might damage your crown.

Practicing Good Oral Hygiene

Gum disease can cause dental implants to fail. Maintaining proper oral hygiene is essential. If you ever notice bleeding gums or puffiness, let us know. Gum disease can spread throughout the mouth quickly.

If you are looking for information on implant dentistry in the Irvine, CA area, Dr. Jeffrey Robertson is a wealth of knowledge and experience in the placement and restoration of dental implants. Give us a call today to schedule your appointment at Irvine Dental

dental implants irvine caOne of the best benefits of dental implants is that they are relatively easy to take care of. Because they mimic your natural teeth, you can brush and floss them normally. If you have an implant-supported bridge, you may need special floss to get the job done. All great care begins with excellent home dental hygiene habits.

Brushing and flossing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste can help you to prevent periodontal (gum) disease and decay. Periodontal disease is the biggest enemy when it comes to dental implants. Having an active infection in your gums puts your implant at risk because bacteria could cause gum disease and bone loss.

Avoiding Infection

Your gums and bone are what holds your implant in place. If you have gum recession or bone loss, your implant root may become loose and fall out. Having excellent home care and calling us if you ever see any signs of infection is the best way to avoid trouble.

Call immediately if you experience redness, swelling, inflammation, soreness, or bleeding. We can do an exam in our office and hopefully stop any serious problem before it starts.

Making and keeping your regularly scheduled exam and cleaning appointments are the best way to protect the investment you made in your smile.

Child Braces Irvine, CAJust like any dental treatment, the cost depends on the length, complexity, and type of treatment necessary. The best way to determine the cost of your child’s braces is to first do a full evaluation. That way, we can see the number of phases necessary, the type of braces your child will need, and an estimate on how long treatment may take.

As I am sure you can imagine, orthodontic conditions range from very simple to extremely complex. The cost will depend on factors such as the type of hardware we will use, whether your child will require dental extractions, any surgery necessary, and how many phases of treatment we estimate.

General Dentistry

General Dentist Irvine CABad breath can come from a number of places. The bad breath we concern ourselves within dentistry is not the kind that comes from eating or drinking. Usually, if you have garlic breath, onion breath, or coffee breath, simply brushing your teeth and using an oral rinse makes it go away.

The bad breath we are concerned about comes from bacteria. When bacteria live inside your mouth, reproducing and causing an infection, they give off a rotten odor. You have probably noticed this when talking to certain people that their breath is awful and it seems like they don’t even know it. The truth is that many people cannot smell their own breath.

When Bad Breath Becomes A Problem

If you do not brush or floss regularly, if your gums hurt or bleed when you do brush or floss, or if your dental floss smells stinky after you use it, you probably have bad breath and don’t even know it.
Dr. Jeffrey Robertson and his dental hygiene team can help you get back on track quickly. After a specialized cleaning, possible oral medication, and improving your home care routine, you do not have to walk around with bad breath any longer. With our help, we can reduce the bacteria in your mouth and protect you from a recurrence.

Call our office today to schedule your exam and to get to the bottom of your bad breath problems.

Invisalign

Invisalign Dentist Irvine CAMany people really want to improve their smiles but the idea of a lot of extensive, lengthy work is daunting. If you have crooked teeth and want to straighten them, but the idea of big bulky brackets makes you shiver, look no further.

At Irvine Dental, we offer Invisalign. Invisalign is an ingenious method for teeth straightening that forgoes the need for ugly brackets. Brackets are uncomfortable and retain food at the worst times. If having a big green piece of broccoli stuck in your brackets is a big fear, Invisalign may be right for you.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign uses clear plastic trays to move your teeth. You will need to change out your trays every two weeks or so in order for treatment to work. Dr. Jeffrey Robertson can provide you with the trays, information, and follow up appointments so that you can have the beautiful straight teeth you always wanted without the hassle.

Even though you wear your Invisalign trays for 22 hours a day, no one will notice because they are clear. You can take them out to brush, floss, and eat. That makes taking care of your teeth during treatment super easy.

To find out more about Invisalign, give us a call and we will get you set up for an evaluation.

Invisalign Certified Dentist in Irvine, CAOne of the reasons patients say they want to avoid braces is because of the pain associated with wearing them. Because your mouth is full of brackets and wires, you can experience sore gums and cheeks due to the brackets rubbing on your soft tissue when you eat and speak. That is why with traditional braces, you may need to use dental wax to protect the inside of your mouth until it becomes accustomed to your brackets.

In addition to the wires and brackets, regular adjustments can cause aching and pain, but is usually easily addressed with an over the counter pain reliever.

The Pros of Invisalign

With Invisalign, you can avoid much of the pain associated with traditional braces. Invisalign utilizes a series of clear, plastic aligners to gently move your teeth. Your aligners will be completely smooth to your cheeks and gums, so you will not need to use dental wax to stay comfortable.

When you change out your aligners, approximately every two weeks, you may experience a little soreness, but most patients report it is much less than with traditional braces. Invisalign moves your teeth very gradually, making treatment more comfortable and easier to adjust to.

When you do experience soreness, it usually subsides within the first day of wearing your new aligner. To learn more about Invisalign, or to schedule your appointment with our Invisalign Certified Provider, call our office in Irvine, CA.

Invisalign Dentist Irvine CAInvisalign is a pretty ingenious system. For people who do not want to have visible braces on their teeth, Invisalign offers an attractive alternative. It is a series of clear plastic aligners you will change out approximately every two weeks throughout the course of your treatment.

We begin by taking impressions in our office, as well as specialized digital imaging to help with treatment planning. Once we have gathered all of the data necessary about your current smile and your future smile, we send it off to have your clear aligners made.

Wearing Your Clear Aligners

When you receive your aligners, you will begin wearing them and replacing them approximately every two weeks. For the best and most timely results, it is necessary for you to wear them 22 hours a day. That means you can take them out to eat and that’s about it.

You will also need to have periodic exams during your treatment to track your progress. Dr. Jeffrey Robertson will keep you posted on your progress and projected completion date. How long treatment takes depends on your particular case, but averages around six to eighteen months.

Because Invisalign is completely clear and does not have brackets, most people will never know that you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. The plastic aligners are smooth and comfortable in addition to being virtually invisible. Call our office to schedule your Invisalign consultation.

Invisalign Dentist Irvine CAMore and more patients are choosing Invisalign over traditional braces. While traditional braces are still necessary in some instances, Invisalign offers the flexibility and convenience that our patients really appreciate.

The biggest attraction to Invisalign is that you cannot see the clear trays you wear for your treatment. Because your custom trays are thin, clear, and slim, most people will never notice that you have them. You can talk normally after getting used to them, which only takes a day or two of practice.

Other Advantages of Invisalign

Another advantage of Invisalign is that you can take out your trays to clean your teeth. Brushing and flossing brackets is a big hassle and requires special tools to remove all of the food particles from your hardware. With Invisalign, you simply remove your trays and brush and floss normally. You also remove them to eat, so you don’t have to worry about getting food in them.

Invisalign is smooth, so it does not irritate the insides of your cheeks. You will not need any orthodontic wax to keep from cutting the lining in your cheeks. Invisalign is comfortable and has no sharp edges.

Because we do not attach anything to your teeth, you don’t have to worry about residual glue or damage from the brackets. When you finish treatment, you just take out your trays and use a retainer normally. Call our office to find out if you qualify for Invisalign

Invisalign certified dentist in Irvine, CAWhen patients express an interest in traditional orthodontics or in Invisalign, they often have concerns about whether they will be able to speak correctly or if others will notice. Just like with regular braces, you will quickly get used to Invisalign and be able to talk without a problem.

The aligners we use to create the Invisalign treatment plan are so thin that they really do not take up much room in your mouth at all. Since they are custom created, they fit on your teeth snugly and do not slip or shift while you talk. It will take a specific lifting or pulling motion to remove your aligners, so there is no need to be concerned about them falling out and embarrassing you.

Other Pros of Invisalign

Invisalign is also completely clear and does not discolor over the two weeks you wear them unless you expose them to something. Since you remove them in order to eat, brush, and floss, you can clean and rinse them thoroughly. When worn correctly, you should have no problem disguising your Invisalign treatment from others.

A couple of day of wearing them full time while speaking normally and you will be a pro, even forgetting that you are wearing your Invisalign. Call our office, located in Irvine, CA to learn more about Invisalign and to speak with our Invisalign Certified Dentist.

Periodontal Care

Periodontal Treatment Irvine, CAIn order to determine if you have periodontal (gum) disease, Dr. Jeffrey Robertson will do a thorough examination of your gum tissue and take special measurements that tell us about the health of your gums. If you experience pain, swelling, or bleeding when you brush or floss, that is a pretty good indication that you have gum disease.

We will make a recommendation for treatment based on the severity of your condition, the health of your teeth, and your expectations for your dental health. We will always help you to make a good decision for your dental future.

The Dental Cleaning Process

Typically, periodontal treatment begins with a specialized dental cleaning that addresses the infection both above and below your gum line. Our dental hygienist is gentle and will make sure you are comfortable for your cleaning. We also have a special topical numbing medication to assist in your comfort.

Periodontal Dentist Irvine CAPeriodontal (gum) disease has numerous complications for both your dental health and your overall systemic health. Periodontal disease can cause both tooth and bone loss when left untreated. Losing teeth and bone can lead to a chain reaction where you lose more teeth. When you lose bone structure, the very foundation of your dentistry is in danger.

Aside from the dental implications of periodontal disease, did you know that scientists linked serious systemic illnesses to having an infection in your gums? Heart disease, strokes, diabetes, cancer, and low-birth-weight babies all have a connection with gum disease. In fact, if you leave your gum disease untreated, you have a 25 percent greater chance of dying due to stroke or sudden heart attacks. That number increases as your tooth loss increases.

Periodontal disease is common among pregnant women because of hormone changes. If you are pregnant, you should visit your dentist more frequently for your health and that of your baby.

Dental anxiety can range from mild apprehension to panic attacks. We do our best to accommodate all of the patients who come to us afraid. We appreciate the opportunity to turn your negative experiences around.

Whether you can have sedation dentistry depends on your medical history. Before we administer sedatives, we will collect a complete medical history to make sure you are healthy enough for sedation.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

For most patients, nitrous oxide is very safe and has few side effects. The exceptions are pregnant patients, patients with specific lung conditions, and if you have an inner ear infection. We also offer oral sedation dentistry. Oral sedation requires a medical prescription and before we write that prescription for you, we want to make sure that none of your other medications will interact with the sedation medication. Please bring a complete list of your medicine to your consultation so that we can make sure you are completely safe during your treatment.

If you experience dental anxiety, don’t keep it a secret! When you let us know, that means that we can take the steps necessary to help you feel comfortable for your appointment.

dentist looking down at camera | sedation dentistry irvine caWe understand that patients can sometimes be fearful of the dentist. Whether you have had a negative experience or just have unexplained anxiety, Dr. Jeffrey Robertson is committed to your comfort and peace of mind.

Along with exceptional patient care and compassion, some patients need something to help them relax for their appointment. That is why we offer both nitrous oxide and non-IV conscious sedation. Dr. Robertson will be happy to discuss your options and help choose the best option for your situation.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide is a safe, mild sedative that has no restrictions. It enters and leaves your system quickly, so you will not have any driving restrictions or need someone to take you home. Nitrous oxide is perfect for shorter procedures.

Oral conscious sedation is a safe, stronger sedative. It lasts longer and the sedative effects are much more intense. Oral conscious sedation will make you completely relaxed and you may not have much memory of the procedure. You will be able to talk and answer questions, but may not be completely aware of your surroundings.

Oral conscious sedation is great for people who have longer or multiple procedures planned. You will need someone to take you home and monitor your well being for the rest of the day. To learn more call Irvine Dental today!

dentist office lights | sedation dentistry irvine ca Because some patients have severe anxiety about going to the dentist, Dr. Jeffrey Robertson offers oral sedation for your comfort. Some people have had prior dental trauma or unexplained dental phobia that makes them anxious and unable to relax for dental procedures.

While Dr. Robertson is extremely gentle and compassionate, we understand that some patients have had negative experiences in the past. Our main goal is to provide you with high-quality dentistry in a comfortable and relaxed environment. For some patients, that means they need a little help relaxing.

Pros of Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is an alternative to the traditional IV sedation used by oral surgeons for dental surgery. Oral sedation is a milder form of sedation and comes in a pill rather than an IV. While you will be completely relaxed, you will still be able to answer questions and follow instructions. Despite being conscious, you may not have any memory of your dental procedure or you may feel like it was a dream.

Many of our patients love the fact that their appointments seem to go by very quickly, smoothly, and are much more relaxing than without sedation.

In order to find out if oral sedation is a good option for you, call and schedule an evaluation. We can discuss your health and medical history to determine the best way to provide you with a relaxing and stress-free dental visit.

When a patient comes to us interested in sedation dentistry it is usually because they have had a negative experience in the past or because they have an unexplained phobia oftwo doctors hovering over camera | oral sedation dentistry irvine ca the dentist. Don’t worry. We don’t take it personally!

Checking Your Medical History

When we consider sedation dentistry as an option for your dental treatment, we will ask you to fill out an extensive medical history. Having an extensive medical history, including any prescription drugs or health issues, allows us to ensure your safety and the efficacy of sedation for your particular case.

Once we have your medical history, Dr. Jeffrey Robertson will carefully review it, looking for any conditions or medications that might be of concern when having oral sedation.

While every drug, medical, or dental procedure has its risks, oral sedation is very safe for most healthy patients. It is milder than IV sedation and though you will still need someone to drive you home after your procedure, the side-effects are minimal. You should plan to relax for the rest of the day after you have sedation. Do not make any big decisions or operate a vehicle, for your safety and the safety of others.

You will likely find yourself completely back to normal the next day and you may have little memory of your treatment.

Nitrous Oxide Dentist in Irvine CANitrous oxide, in dentistry, is a form of sedation used to help patients relax during treatment. Its chemical formula is N2O and it is a colorless gas with a very light, sweet odor. When inhaled, nitrous oxide produces a sedative effect and may even create feelings of euphoria, which is how it gets its nickname, laughing gas.

Using Nitrous Oxide In Dentistry

When we use nitrous oxide in our dental office, we control the flow administered based on body size, age, and gender. We can control the amount of nitrous oxide you receive with a valve. One of the benefits of N2O in sedation dentistry is that it enters and leaves your system quickly. That means you will have very minimal residual effects once we discontinue administration.

When used under the supervision of a dentist, nitrous oxide is so safe we even use it on children. If your child is afraid, anxious, or active, nitrous oxide may help him or her to relax enough to receive their necessary treatment.

Nitrous oxide use is not just for kids, though. Many adults who experience dental anxiety find that it takes the edge off and allows them to relax during their procedures. When patients are relaxed, their overall dental experience is improved. Call our office to learn more!

Oral sedation dentistry allows us to make sure that our patients are comfortable and anxiety-free for their dental appointment. Unlike IV sedation, you will still be conscious for your procedure and able to answer questions and follow simple instructions.

For most patients, oral conscious sedation allows them to completely relax and not worry about dental fear. Because anxiety can inhibit the effectiveness of certain dental anesthetics, oral sedation can also help you to get numb easier and is a helpful tool for those patients who have a hard time getting numb.

Most of our patients report being completely relaxed with little to no memory of their dental appointment. Some patients even doze off completely while we are working. While oral sedation may not be right for every patient, it certainly helps many of ours to eliminate unnecessary anxiety from their dental experience.

Oral sedation can also be useful for patients having lengthy procedures. When you are completely relaxed, it is easier for Dr. Jeffrey Robertson to complete your dental treatment in a timely manner. That means sedation can work great for cases like multiple restorations and smile makeovers.

Scheduling Your Sedation Appointment

It is always our goal to make our patients feel completely comfortable and safe. We realize that some of our patients might require a little help to relax at their dental appointment. If you have questions about oral sedation dentistry, we encourage you to call. Our helpful team looks forward to helping put your mind at ease regarding dentistry.

Sedation Dentist Irvine CAWhen Dr. Jeffrey Robertson offers you sedation dentistry in our office, you will have a couple of options. The first option is nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Nitrous oxide can help you to relax and feel less concerned about your dental appointment. It enters and leaves your system very quickly. You will feel normal a few moments after we stop administering it.

The second option is oral conscious sedation. When you have oral conscious sedation, we give you medication in order to sedate you. Most people do not remember much of their appointment and they feel completely relaxed. Unlike with nitrous oxide, oral sedation takes a little while to work and takes time to wear off. You will feel the effects of oral conscious sedation for the rest of the day, but should feel completely normal by the next morning.

Nitrous Oxide vs Oral Sedation

With both options, you are completely conscious. The sedation we offer allows you to respond to questions we might ask and even walk around with assistance. The side effects are much milder and the medication leaves your system much more quickly than with IV sedation.

While most patients, even kids, can have nitrous oxide safely, we will ask for an extensive medical history before offering you oral conscious sedation to make sure you are healthy enough for the medication. Call Irvine Dental, the dental office of Dr. Jeffrey Robertson to learn more about sedation dentistry or to book your appointment.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep Apnea Treatment in Irvine CAAll dentists, including Dr. Jeffrey Robertson, must undergo training in order to be able to treat obstructive sleep apnea using oral appliance therapy. Additionally, it will still be necessary for you to receive a diagnosis from an accredited sleep clinic. You will need to obtain a referral from your doctor in order to have a sleep study.

The AASM (American Academy of Sleep Medicine) recommends treatment for mild to moderate sleep apnea with oral appliances if you do not tolerate or do not wish to use the CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) machine for treatment of your obstructive sleep apnea.

Therapy for Sleep Apnea

It is true; many patients do not tolerate the CPAP machine and find oral appliance therapy a highly successful and convenient form of treatment. Oral appliances generally work by moving your lower jaw forward in order to open your airway. By keeping those muscles taut at the back of your throat, you will get better sleep with reduced or eliminated snoring.

When you contact our Irvine, CA dental office for treatment of sleep apnea, you are in good hands. Dr. Jeffrey Robertson will provide you with accurate information and an honest recommendation for treatment that best supports your overall health and wellness.

Sleep Apnea Treatment in Irvine CAThe type of oral appliance we use to treat your sleep apnea will depend on your particular symptoms and condition. Once you receive an obstructive sleep apnea diagnosis through an accredited sleep study clinic, you may choose to have an oral appliance instead of a CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) machine. While CPAP machines are highly effective in the treatment of sleep apnea, many patients do not tolerate them well and have difficulty sleeping.

Types of Oral Appliances

According to the AASM, oral appliances are effective as a treatment for minor to moderate sleep apnea. Oral appliances typically work in one of two ways. They either gently move your lower jaw forward, opening your airway, or they gently pull your tongue forward using a suction bulb, achieving the same result.

The first type of appliance is much more common and is effective for most people with obstructive sleep apnea. If you have questions about whether treatment with an oral appliance is right for your obstructive sleep apnea, call our Irvine, California dental office for an evaluation.

Sleep Apnea Treatment Irvine, CASnoring can be one of the most frustrating experiences for the spouse or partner of someone who snores. Many patients share stories of being able to hear someone snoring even down a long hallway in another room. Unfortunately, when a spouse snores, often the couple splits up to sleep in two separate rooms. As you can imagine, this creates a strain on even the very best of relationships.

Finding Snoring Relief

Dr. Jeffrey Robertson treats hundreds of desperate patients each year for snoring relief. He sympathizes with patients who suffer from snoring because he understands how disruptive it is.

That is why he decided to create special oral appliances in order to help patients get relief from snoring. He offers different types of oral appliances all designed to help open your airway. Some appliances help by keeping your lower jaw forward in order to open your airway at your throat or to keep your tongue from sliding back to block your throat and restrict air.

When you come to our office for snoring relief, you will find a compassionate team sensitive to your struggles. Dr. Jeffrey Robertson looks forward to offering his expertise to increase your restful sleep and your quality of life. Call today to schedule an evaluation.

Obstructive sleep apnea, the most common form of sleep apnea, is a potentially dangerous condition because it blocks your airway as you sleep. This can cause periodic bouts of not breathing, which causes a number of health conditions such as high blood pressure, strokes, fatigue, and depression.woman plugging her ears from her husband snoring | sleep apnea treatment irvine ca

Sleep apnea must be diagnosed by a medical professional and involves a sleep study at an accredited sleep clinic. Once diagnosis occurs, you may be prescribed a CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) machine to relieve your symptoms. Most patients get the relief they need from the CPAP machine, but some do not. That is where we can help.

Mouth Guard for Sleep Apnea

For those patients with mild cases of sleep apnea who do not tolerate the CPAP machine well, Dr. Jeffrey Robertson offers an alternative in the form of a dental appliance worn at night. This custom made appliance gently moves the lower jaw forward in order to open your airway and allow for the unobstructed breath necessary to keep you healthy and provide a good night’s sleep.

For more information about sleep apnea alternatives, contact our Irvine, CA office. Dr. Jeffrey Robertson can help you achieve a healthy and restful night’s sleep and improve your health and quality of life.

Sleep Apnea Dentist in irvine, CAWhile we don’t know the cause of obstructive sleep apnea for every patient, certain risk factors increase your chances:

  • Being male
  • Over 60 years of age
  • Overweight or obese
  • Thick neck circumference
  • Small airway
  • Enlarged tonsils
  • Lack of muscle tone in throat
  • Family history

Obstructive sleep apnea is dangerous when left untreated. If you received a diagnosis of sleep apnea, chances are your doctor recommended a CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) machine. The fact is that some people just cannot get comfortable at night wearing a CPAP mask, or they end up removing the mask in the middle of the night, defeating the purpose of treatment.

Oral Appliance Therapy

Recent scientific evidence points to the effectiveness of oral appliances in the treatment of sleep apnea. Our oral appliances are custom made and designed to help open your airway so that appropriate air flow is unrestricted. They assist in keeping your tongue from sliding back and blocking your airway or gently slide your lower jaw forward, opening your airway.

Our patients tell us how much our sleep apnea devices have changed their lives. They are both comfortable and effective and most people get used to wearing them after only a short time. They are not bulky and allow you to sleep in any position that feels comfortable to you without tubes or a mask. Call our office today to schedule your consultation to see if you can benefit from oral appliance therapy.

Sleep Dentist Irvine CAIn addition to a custom made oral appliance to help reduce the symptoms of snoring, Dr. Jeffrey Robertson may recommend some behavior modifications to help reduce snoring as well.

We do not completely understand every reason for snoring. However, we do know that certain behaviors and conditions increase the likelihood that you will snore. Some of the more preventable behaviors include alcohol use, being overweight, and the use of sleeping pills.

Reduce Your Snoring

Losing weight and minimizing or eliminating the use of drugs and alcohol can dramatically improve your symptoms. Extra weight, alcohol use, and use of sleeping pills all increase the pressure on your throat from excess weight or from being overly relaxed. That pressure is what creates the loud vibrations.

It may seem impossible to lose weight, but even a small weight loss of 5-10% of your body weight can have a positive effect on your overall health and the symptoms of snoring.

Patients often express concerns over giving up alcohol, but alcohol actually interrupts your sleep. You may think you sleep better when you have a few drinks, but scientific studies show your rest is not as deep or satisfying.

When people give up sleeping pills, they often have a short adjustment period where their bodies return to normal and no longer depend on sleeping pills for sleep, but the withdrawal symptoms are generally over quickly.

If you would like more advice about how to reduce or eliminate your snoring, call our office and we will be happy to help.

Sleep Dentist Irvine CAWhile the cause of snoring is often not known for sure, but certain risk factors increase the chances of snoring in certain individuals.

  • Obesity
  • Males snore more than females
  • Thick neck circumference
  • Swollen tonsils
  • Sickness
  • Allergies
  • Nasal polyps
  • Deformed septum
  • A large tongue
  • Alcohol use
  • Sleeping pills or sedatives

Snoring can disrupt sleep for the whole family when it is severe and it may be a sign of another serious condition called obstructive sleep apnea. If we suspect obstructive sleep apnea, we may refer you to a sleep clinic to confirm a diagnosis in order to know how to properly treat you.

Avoiding alcohol and sleeping pills may also help improve your sleep by lessening snoring. Alcohol and sleeping pills sometimes over-relax the muscles at the back of the throat, causing an obstruction.

Treating Snoring

At Dr. Jeffrey Robertson’s office, we typically treat snoring with an oral appliance designed to help open your airway and prevent or lessen snoring. Our patients report success with our oral appliances and note that they are comfortable to wear and allow them to get a better quality of sleep.

No good reason exists for you to go through life with disrupted sleep. Dr. Jeffrey Robertson sees hundreds of patients each year for snoring with excellent results. We welcome you to call and make an appointment.

Sleep Apnea in Irvine, CAWhen most people refer to sleep apnea, they mean obstructive sleep apnea, caused by a restricted airway while you sleep. Some of the symptoms are loud snoring and interrupted breathing. The result is increased risks to your health including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Extra tissue at the back of your throat cuts off your airway and prevents you from breathing normally. You may not get enough sleep, as a result. Even if you feel you slept an entire night, you may not get the quality deep sleep that allows your body to rejuvenate.

Common Signs of Sleep Apnea

One of the most common signs of sleep apnea is loud snoring. Loud snoring is a disruption, not only for your sleep, but for your partner’s sleep as well. Additionally, your partner may report that you stop breathing during the night.

If you sleep alone, the first symptom may be that you feel like you never get enough sleep. You may be in bed for eight hours, but never feel completely rested or refreshed. If you have prolonged symptoms of fatigue, it may be beneficial for you to get a referral from your primary care doctor in order to participate in a sleep study. A sleep study will monitor your quality of sleep and be able to tell you if you suffer from sleep apnea. Here at our office in Irvine, CA, we offer solutions for your sleep apnea. Snoring treatment is not a one-size-fits-all practice. In order to find out how to best treat your snoring symptoms, we need to do an evaluation and find out some things about your medical history.

Factors of Snoring

Third, your anatomy may contribute to snoring because of the tissues located at the back of your throat. Fourth, having a deformed nasal septum contributes to snoring. Fifth, the use of alcohol increases snoring. Sixth, the use of sleeping pills or prescription sedatives may relax the throat more than usual, causing snoring.

Snoring Relief

Some of our patients come to us because their spouse or partner has complained of loud, disruptive snoring. Snoring is not just a nuisance; it can be a sign of a serious health condition called sleep apnea. Getting checked for sleep apnea through a sleep study is essential to rule out any potentially dangerous conditions.

Snoring can disrupt your sleep and the sleep of those who share your house with you. Daytime fatigue can make you less alert and able to function properly throughout your day. It can be dangerous to operate a vehicle or use machinery without a proper night’s sleep.

You can wear down your teeth, break them, and even crack them. Treating bruxism is so important to maintaining your dental health.

People often refer to conditions of the jaw as TMJ because your jaw joint is called the temporomandibular joint. Conditions of the jaw are often referred to as TMJD or temporomandibular joint disorder.

Usually when people say they have TMJ, they are referring to the symptoms of a joint disorder or dysfunction. Some of the symptoms may include:

  • Clicking
  • Popping
  • Pain
  • Locking open
  • Locking closed
  • Headaches
  • Neck aches
  • Shoulder pain
  • Teeth grinding

TMJD often starts with no real cause, though some patients have reported symptoms after a car accident, sports injury, or other trauma. Often, a cause cannot be pinpointed. TMJD can start at any stage of life in both men and women.

Treating TMJ

You may notice worsening symptoms after you wake up in the morning. If you do, it is a pretty good indication that you are grinding your teeth at night. A night guard or splint could help to relieve your symptoms and improve your comfort. A night guard can also protect your teeth from wear and tear you may cause from teeth grinding and clenching.

Sometimes, symptoms may be worse at times of stress. Managing your stress and limiting stress-causing foods like caffeine and sugar could work in conjunction with treatment to provide you faster relief.

If you hear regular clicking and popping in your jaw, you may be suffering from something called temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMJD for short). TMJD is a condition where your jaw is out of alignment. This can cause pain, clicking, popping, locking, and even change how your teeth come together. Because TMJD rarely resolves on its own, if you suspect you have TMJD, scheduling an appointment with a dentist who knows about TMJ would be a good idea.

Patients often start having symptoms after having and accident, new dental work, or symptoms may gradually appear over time. Teenagers often experience clicking and popping, but rarely report anything unless pain is involved.

At our office, Dr. Jeffrey Robertson treats TMJD with several different approaches, depending on your symptoms. Treatment is generally non-invasive and using an occlusal splint or NTI device can relieve most symptoms.

Mouthguard for TMJ

An occlusal guard is made of acrylic and fits comfortable over your teeth during the day or at night. It can help to reposition the jaw and prevent tooth grinding. An NTI device fits over your front teeth at night, and gently moves your jaw forward, preventing grinding and providing relief to your muscles.

The treatment that works best for you depends on your symptoms and the severity of your symptoms. Dr. Robinson can help you feel more comfortable and relieve symptoms of TMJ through effective diagnosis and treatment.
